Samsung ‘to overtake Nokia as biggest smartphone vendor’ | TechiePk

Handsets such as the Nexus S will help Samsung overtake Nokia as the biggest smartphone vendor, according to analysts. Photograph: Albert Gea/Reuters

Samsung will become the world’s largest smartphone maker this quarter, overtaking the struggling Nokia, which has led the market since 1996, the analysts Nomura forecast on Monday.
Nomura also forecast that Apple will outpace the Finnish phone maker in the top end of the mobile market in the third quarter of this year, adding to its woes, which include dramatic cuts in its profit forecast and a downgrading of its credit rating.
Other analysts agreed that Nokia’s position as the top seller in smartphones is likely to be overtaken either in this quarter or the next.
Nomura is bullish about the prospects for Samsung, a Korean company which makes a broad range of electronic equipment, including smartphones running Google’s Android mobile operating system, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, and its own bada software.
In the first quarter of this year Nokia sold just over 24m smartphones worldwide, but it has since said that its mobile division is coming under pricing and sales pressure from rivals. Apple sold 18.7m iPhones in the first quarter of 2011, while Samsung sold 12.6m. But Samsung has been ramping up its production and shifting its focus to smartphones, which are more profitable than low-end handsets.
“Nokia looks set to relinquish its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple,” Nomura analysts said in a research note. “Further emphasising the shift in power to Asia is our forecast for HTC to almost match Nokia during 2012.

”Nokia’s mobile division revenues and profits: what the analysts forecast Research firms Gartner and Canalys both said they saw Nokia – which created the smartphone market with its 1996 launch of the Communicator model – losing smartphone volume leadership later this year.
“If Nokia’s new phones [running Microsoft's Windows Phone software] are not well received in the third quarter and (with) the [Samsung] Galaxy S2 ramping up, Samsung might overtake them and become the smartphone leader in the third quarter,” said Carolina Milanesi, smartphone analyst for the research company Gartner.
Nokia has lost initiative in the smartphone market to Apple’s iPhone with its proprietary iOS operating system and Google’s Android devices, and at the lower end to more nimble Asian rivals such as ZTE.
Overall, Nokia still makes more cellphones than Samsung due to its strong position in basic cellphones and its wider distribution network in emerging countries. But analysts polled last week forecast that it will ship fewer than 100m phones a quarter this year for the first time since the beginning of 2009, and for only the second time since the end of 2006, as “white label” rivals begin to cut into its share of the wider business.
The company is abandoning its Symbian platform for smartphones over the next 18 months and switching to Microsoft’s software as part of an overhaul of its phone business set out in February by Stephen Elop, a Canadian formerly at Microsoft who was appointed chief executive in September.
On 31 May Nokia abandoned hope of meeting key annual and quarterly targets just weeks after setting them, raising questions over whether its new boss can deliver on the turnaround he promised.
Shares in Nokia were 0.6% firmer at €4.33 at the start of the day, in line with a slightly stronger technology sector.

Samsung Galaxy Indulge joins the 4G LTE family

Samsung intends to expand their Galaxy (range of phones, that is) with the latest addition, the Samsung Galaxy Indulge. It is rather interesting to note that this latest release will not arrive on any of the big four carriers, but rather, will be made available to MetroPCS, one of the smaller players over in the US. Still, that doesn’t detract from the fact that the Galaxy Indulge is one of the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE enabled Android smartphone.
MetroPCS’ main selling point that will accompany the Galaxy Indulge is this – it costs around half that of other 4G smartphone where service plans are concerned, as consumers are able to “have it all”, so to speak, with MetroPCS’ $50 and $60 4G LTE smartphone service plans, where it will comprise of all applicable taxes and regulatory fees.
If you happen to talk a whole lot, text as well as browse the Internet on your smartphone, enjoy streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications, then this does sound like the perfect plan for you – although we’re not too sure whether the coverage of MetroPCS is going to jive with you or not.
Running on the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, the Galaxy Indulge is touted to be the perfect smartphone for folks who want to manage every aspect of their lives from a mobile device. MetroPCS’ 4G LTE service is more than capable of delivering the latest exclusive entertainment and multimedia content from their favorite shows through the MetroSTUDIO application.
With more than 100,000 apps to choose from from the Android Market, you’re spoilt for choice. Of course, it goes without saying that Samsung has skinned the Galaxy Indulge with their very own TouchWiz enhancements to make navigation around the device’s home screens a whole lot easier compared to the vanilla Android user interface. In addition, the combination of touch screen/QWERTY keyboard lets you choose which mode you’re more comfortable with – I personally prefer the latter, of course.
Other hardware specifications include a 1GHz processor, access to Google Mobile services, a 3 megapixel camera and camcorder with auto-focus, music player, Stereo Bluetooth connectivity and a microSD memory card slot. Expect it to hit MetroPCS stores later this week for $399.

MetroPCS teams up with Snoop Dogg for Samsung Galaxy Indulge

Rappers are one of the better businessmen out there, after all they tend to drive those flashy big cars, cruising around town with a couple of birds in the back seat, wearing a whole lot of bling while boasting of an earning power which would put a small nation’s GDP to shame. Well, guess when it comes to money, it is never enough for most people.
One of the more famous rappers to have graced this planet would be Snoop Dogg, and here he is teaming up with MetroPCS (one of the smaller mobile carriers in the US), introducing the recently announced Samsung Galaxy IndulgeT, which holds the distinction of being the world’s first commercially available 4G LTE Android smartphone, where it is offered only with 4GLTE service from MetroPCS.

According to Snoop Dogggg, “It feels good to be working with MetroPCS and Samsung for the launch of the Galaxy Indulge. I’m stepping it up to 4G’s so my phone can keep up with my demanding, always-connected lifestyle.” Now we don’t know if that is the gospel truth, or was it part of his endorsement plan, but at least there is one thing we do know – that hot dawg lives a demanding lifestyle, yo!
Of course, MetroPCS and Snoop Dogg has your money’s best interest in mind (that depends on how you see it), so they will be offering the 4GLTE smartphone service plans at around half the cost of other carriers’ 4G smartphone service plans if you decide to shop around. Both $50 and $60 plans will include all applicable taxes and regulatory fees, not to mention MetroPCS’ unmatched value with unlimited talk, text and 4GLTE Web page browsing.
Feel free too to enjoy unlimited data access (this is also pretty subjective, there is usually a cap before they throttle your line) to streaming audio, video and gaming content, downloads and Android applications on the Galaxy Indulge. If you were looking for a new smartphone that is supposedly blazing fast, tearing up the performance charts, the Galaxy Indulge might be worth a peek.

Samsung Galaxy Tab has pretty high return rates

Isn’t it a wonder what good marketing can do for you? That is what’s happening with the Samsung Galaxy Tab after the real story breaks cover, where the return rates of this Android-powered tablet device is far higher than that of its main rival, the Apple iPad. We’re talking about a Wall Street firm estimating that around 15% of the Galaxy Tabs sold are actually returned, which is nearly 700% higher than what the iPad is looking at (2%).

Of course, this 15% rate comprises of sales from the tablet’s debut since November through January 16 this year. The culprit behind the high return rates? It could be because Samsung decided to go ahead with Android 2.2 while rushing the Tab out to the market for first mover advantage, despite Google already stating that Android 2.2 Froyo is unsuitable for tablet use, where Android 3.0 Honeycomb is a whole lot better since it was specially optimized for such use.

Hopefully with the advent of Honeycomb-powered tablets, the return rate of future Tabs won’t be that high, and the whole ordeal will be forgotten soon. Guess all those record breaking feats (2 million sold milestone) do not mean that much anymore, while the recent price drop might just lure more people to end up under the “return” pile. We await further developments with bated breath.

Source: Unwired View

Update: Apparently, all of this is a miscommunication, and the Galaxy Tab has fared much better than reported. We apologized for riling the feathers of Samsung fans, and Samsung says that the Galaxy Tab has a return rate of only 2%.

Samsung ST6500 digital camera comes in an ergonomic package

Samsung intends to break new ground with their ST6500 digital camera, where it will sport a design which is not only pleasing to the eyes, but ergonomic to hold as well. Sure, you won’t be able to get carpal tunnel syndrome from using a digital camera, but anything that fits into the palm of your hand in an easier fashion or manner is definitely worth looking at, don’t you think so?

The ST6500 takes an unconventional approach as it has an angled design, where the camera’s body is curved around the lens and angled at 7 degrees to make for a more ergonomic fit in the hand. This is certainly innovative thinking, taking a good step away from the conventionally designed models that currently flood the market. In essence, the overall design helps ensure that creative images are perfectly captured, and you are guaranteed to make a style statement at any social event whenever you pull this puppy out from your bag.

Samsung also makes sure that you aren’t left behind in the megapixel race, with the ST6500 sporting a high-quality 16-megapixel sensor which is touted to guarantee crisp and clear images. Of course, megapixels aren’t everything as consumers have found out, so the ability to capture images under difficult and challenging conditions are also important.

Ever tried to shoot photos in low light conditions? You’ll know what we’re talking about, so hopefully the Samsung ST6500 is capable of doing so without too much noise. Other hardware specifications include a powerful 5x zoom lens, a new Smart Touch 3.0 User Interface, a 3.0” multi-purpose LCD touchscreen display, intelligent Smart Auto feature, HD video recording, Magic Frame capability, and advanced Smart Filter 2.0 among others.

You won’t be able to get it anytime soon though, as the Samsung ST6500 will only hit the markets this coming March for $229 a pop. Ah well, at least that gives you over a month to save up for this.
